Cyclone Arnab, the first named storm of this year's North Indian Ocean season, strengthened fast and made landfall in Andhra Pradesh on October 28 as a very severe cyclonic storm, hours before the IMD expected. It dropped more than 100 mm of rain on several coastal districts, and the Chief Minister reported five deaths. The editorial credits disaster management for keeping deaths low but wants States to plan for zero disruption.

Clinging on: On Netanyahu and the Israel elections

Israel voted on October 27. With 85.6% of votes counted, Benjamin Netanyahu's right-religious coalition has lost its majority but is still the largest bloc: Likud is projected to win 26 seats and Gadi Eisenkot's Yashar 21. The Arab parties, with about 19 seats between them, could decide who governs. The editorial holds Netanyahu responsible for the October 7 failures and the wars that followed, and asks the Opposition to form a broad coalition with the Arab parties.
